AI can be a powerful personal assistant
Can AI be that Perfect Personal Assistant you’ve always dreamed of?
(Surely not?!)
In my head that person looked like Jennifer Hudson’s character in the first ‘S3x and the City’ movie. (Yes, there were several; and yes I watched them. The last one with a bit of self-loathing but I still finished it.)
So, Jennifer Hudson plays Louise from St. Louis – the first major Black female character in the show’s 10 years - as Carrie Bradshaw’s assistant. She’s whip smart. And ON IT!
Louise embodies everything lust-worthy in my entrepreneurial life!
But I recognize good writing when I see it.
Louise is NOT real.
Forward, then!
To more good writing; this time in the form of A. J. Jacobs. And his hilarious, irreverent, and genius piece on the ability to outsource your life! (Read: My Outsourced Life). It begins: “I REALLY SHOULDN’T HAVE to write this article myself. I mean, why am I the one stuck in front of a computer terminal? All this tedious pecking out of words on my laptop. Nouns, verbs, adjectives, prepositions. Jesus. What a pain in my ass. Can’t someone else do it? Can’t I delegate this to one of my new assistants and spend my day kicking back on a chaise lounge, Sam Adams in hand, admiring Mischa Barton’s navel on my TV?” and it ends, “Yes, America, we’re cooked”
The reason the piece was so funny, and so offensive to many, is that the idea of delegating in a way that takes a lot of stuff off your plate, AFFORDABLY, is not easy. And many models, like the 4-hour work week glamourized by Tim Feriss, end up being exploitative from a DEI perspective for small businesses who may not have the budget, bandwidth or headspace to put the right frameworks in place to ensure fairness - including fairness to themselves!
Yes, you could have one VERY EXPENSIVE person, or several people/models fractionally, help you successfully expand what you bring to the business as a founder. But, it takes time, focus, know-how, and frankly, the ability to check in your ego.
Most founders I know are poor at one or all of these things haha!
And so,
we bemoan the lack of time for the truly BHAGs (big, hairy, audacious, goals) that sit on the back burner.
Or only notice that the pipeline needs building when revenue slows down.
Or wish you could have more time so you didn’t feel like a half-as$ parent more and more days.
(All of these have been me at one point or another, BTW)
Well, until now.
You guessed it!
Until generative AI.
As far as I’m concerned, using the likes of ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini only to help you write a few articles at work; using it as a cheap marketing tool, is myopic. It can offer MASSIVE gains when you start to think of ways to use it that are strategic.
Less: telling it to do tactical things like: “write me a XXX for YYY and make 111 words for LLL platform”
More: asking it to lead you through a strategic process of thinking, and working. Like a co-pilot, co-strategist, or co-creator.
This idea freaks many people out.
But clearly not you, because you’re still reading.
And so, instead of going all the way, start small, with habits in your everyday life that can use support or delegation to a machine.
Try using ChatGPT not just as a work tool, but as a personal assistant for almost anything. Our guide, "Use AI to Design Your Life" opens up a world where AI helps you juggle life like a pro.
