How many hours a day do you use ChatGPT?
I get asked a lot by people I speak to – on podcasts, in masterminds, and ‘in-real-life’ meetups – “Who should I follow and learn from if I am just getting started with generative AI?”
To answer that, allow me to tell you a story.
In a recent podcast panel recording on the subject or AI literacy, a different (and loaded) question came up.
Casual enough at first.
What do we (the educators and promoters of AI literacy for all) call ourselves in this swiftly evolving domain of generative AI?
“AI expert” seemed too grand, too definite for a field so new (to us in the masses).
“AI specialist” seems too static for a field that’s literally developing at an exponential pace to anything we’ve known before.
(Fun fact: It took the internet 10 years to gain the levels of adoption that ChatGPT had in 3 months. Source: Reuters)
Generative AI, especially in its mainstream form, is like an ocean that’s just been discovered. Many of us, myself included, are not traditional tech wizards. We are the curious explorers, the knowledge translators who bridge the gap between complex technical concepts and those eager to understand and utilize them. Only when we learn and understand AI will we be able to shape the way in which it’s developed, deployed, and used in the future.
And so here’s the third question (or the first, if you count the subject!): How many hours a day do you spend using ChatGPT?
For me it’s regularly been 6-10 hours, not out of necessity, but sheer fascination.
It’s like being handed a key to a world full of magic and unexplored potential. And I am here for it!
While many of us, focussed on creating AI literacy (and helping more people get access to generative AI to create equity) care very little about acquiring a title or claiming expertise, the question remains:
Who can you learn from?
Well, learn from the AI optimists.
(Now when people ask me what they can call me, I’ve settled on ‘AI optimist’.
And I continue to advise people to allow others to call them ‘expert’ and ‘specialist’. And I’m working on learning how to wear those titles with greater ease myself.)
Learn from the people who are showing you the receipts that they are doing their time diving into these generative AI tools with visible results. I am reminded of the 10,000-hour rule from the book “Mastery” by Robert Greene. It lays out that true expertise in any field takes 10,000 hours of practice. In a domain as fresh as generative AI, many people have 2,000 hours and counting – in ONE year. This is mastery acquisition at warp speed!
How many hours a day do you spend on ChatGPT or other generative AI tools?
So, reflect on your own journey. How deeply are you diving into the world of generative AI? Seasoned professional or just starting, if you’re reading this, you are clear you want to carve a path to mastery.
