Using AI to Plan your Dream Life: A Step-by-Step Guide

What if the key to unlocking your dream life was just a question away? With ChatGPT, that might not be such a far-fetched idea. Generative AI is not just for helping you write emails or brainstorm business ideas - it’s a powerful second brain to help you design the life you’ve always wanted.

In Episode 228 of AI Literacy for Entrepreneurs, I shared a behind-the-scenes tutorial on how I’ve been using ChatGPT (and its newest 01 model) to dream bigger and get clearer about what matters most in my life. 

Why Use AI for Life Planning?

Life planning involves aligning your daily actions with your values, dreams, and purpose. Too often, while we have an idea in our heads we don’t know where to start drawing the map. That’s where AI comes in. Tools like ChatGPT offer a unique advantage because they can ask YOU insightful questions, organize your thoughts, and even suggest steps you might not have considered.

Major AI ‘hack’: The power of AI isn’t just in the answers it gives - it’s in the questions it can ask you. This is what I call the ‘master prompt’

“Ask me questions to help me [insert goal here]”

Step 1: Start with your Values

Every great plan starts with clarity. Use AI to get to the root of what matters most to you. 

Try prompts like:

  • “Ask me questions to help me identify five values that I want to live by in my personal and professional life.”

  • What’s one thing I can do every day to align my actions with those values?

These prompts help ChatGPT get your original input first and then generate a foundation for your planning process, giving you a clear map.

Step 2: Dream Big - Then Get Specific

Your dream life should be just that to start - a dream. Let yourself imagine what’s possible. Take away the barriers of “how?” and “no, that’s not possible”. AI can really help you get out of your head!

Then, break those dreams down into actionable steps. 

Here’s a sample prompt: “If I want to spend more time traveling while maintaining my business, how can I structure my workweek to make that possible?”

ChatGPT might suggest things like:

  • Outsourcing specific tasks

  • Adopting a four-day workweek

  • Creating passive income streams

The magic here is that AI doesn’t just give you the what -  at this stage it starts offering insights into the how. Which is most people’s favourite part!

Step 3: Make AI a Co-Creator

One of the most exciting parts of using AI for planning the life of your dreams is its ability to collaborate with you. Think of it as a brainstorming partner that doesn’t tire or judge your ideas. For instance, when planning your dream life, you might ask:

“What are three potential roadblocks to achieving [goal] and how can I overcome them?”

ChatGPT will analyze your input and give you strategic ideas you might not have thought of. 

Step 4: Use AI to Cultivate Micro Habits

Big goals are built on small, consistent actions. Use AI to map out the habits you need to implement today to achieve tomorrow’s dreams. 

For example:

  • Prompt: “Suggest a daily habit that aligns with my goal of becoming a more mindful leader.”

  • Prompt: “How can I dedicate 10 minutes a day to personal growth while managing a busy schedule?”

With its ability to synthesize ideas, ChatGPT can help you create routines that stick, saving you the mental load of figuring it out yourself.

Step 5: Reflect and Revisit

Dreaming isn’t a one-time exercise; it’s a process. AI can help you reflect on your progress and make adjustments along the way. Use it to journal your wins, challenges, and evolving priorities.

Prompt: “Ask me questions to help me review my progress over the last 90 days and plan improvements.” (see why I call it the ‘master prompt’)

This ongoing dialogue ensures you’re not just planning your dream life - you’re actively living it.

Planning your dream life with AI is a game-changer (yes I said game-changer because this type of planning merits the hyperbole) for several reasons:

Focus: It keeps you accountable and organized, even when life gets messy.

But here’s the thing: AI isn’t here to replace your intuition or values - it will amplify them. It helps you step back from the noise and focus on what truly matters.
